Though it generally sparks flashbacks of poor fashion judgment in the ‘80s and ‘90s or awkward middle school days when you didn’t know any better, denim on denim is back – and it’s looking better than ever. This time around, double denim outfits don’t necessarily mean boxy jackets, silly jumpsuits or dated washes. Read on for my favorite denim picks and how to wear the denim on denim trend that’s so on point this season without risking looking like you’re wearing a Canadian tuxedo.
- Try out a denim version of your favorite silhouette – a ladies denim blazer, denim motorcycle jacket or denim vest can easily update any outfit. Other than outerwear, a ladies chambray shirt can act as a substitute for your favorite button-down – I especially like this chambray ‘Safari’ shirt from Banana Republic. For warmer days, look for a denim dress.
- Mix and match: To avoid indigo overload, mix and match different washes – one safe route is a light top with a darker bottom, like a light-hued chambray shirt with a pair of dark blue denim jeans. You can also look outside indigo – gray or white denim is always crisp and fresh, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can try out an acid-wash.
