Quite a few celebrities have been donning apparel with a metallic hue, the most recent being Zoe Saldana wearing a Lanvin dress at the Teen Choice Awards on August 7th 2011. Other celebrities who have been spotted in metallic outfits are Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez at the Grammys 2011, and Kirsten Stewart at the 2011 People’s Choice Awards. While all of these celebrities were spotted wearing metallic dresses, metallic separates are just as much of a trend. They are also less intimidating to wear and easier to dress down when you feel like it.
Jackets and blazers: Of the various separates, jackets and blazers are the most visible. Depending on the image you want to create you could choose from outerwear as diverse as the futuristic looking silver Haider Ackerman Serra open-front blazer, the golden Berek metallic leather vest with a rock-star vibe, the subtle Kay Unger New York sparkle ladies evening jacket, the flamboyant Oscar de la Renta metallic jacquard blazer or the St John metallic jacquard coat.Tops: Metallic tops are very versatile; some are out and out glittery like the Roamans metallic uneven hem tee while others like the Jean Paul Gaultier striped metallic top have metallic strands that add a subtle shine. These tops can be dressed up by wearing accessories that highlight the metallic tone or be dressed down by wearing an understated jacket or blazer, as with the Nanette Lepore ethereal ruffled metallic top, shown above.
Bottoms: Pair metallic trousers or skirt with a similar jacket to get a suit set, for instance the Bigio collections bow-shoulder Doupioni suit. For a casual occasion, you can opt for a girly top with a pair of shorts, jeans or a skirt.
Metallic separates are the latest trend. Adopt the trend when you want to add a bit of glimmer to your attire. Dress it down when you feel reluctant to wear an all-out metallic outfit. Dress it up but exercise a bit of caution when you do so as you wouldn’t want to look like a showgirl, would you!
